A recent study reported initially in JAMA Dermatology with highlights reprinted in the March 22, 2018 edition of Dermatology News indicate many acne patients do not get their prescriptions filled. This study included 385 patients identified via the EHR of 4 dermatology practices in Pennsylvania.

Many individuals indicated they did not present the prescription to the pharmacy, did not pick up the prescription, or picked up the prescription but did not take the medication. Twenty-six individuals agreed to be interviewed via phone. About 505 of those interviewed individuals did not get the medication filled. Cited reasons for not taking or filling the prescriptions included medication costs, prior authorizations requirement, and reservations about taking the prescription.
